The Landfill Projects team start their monumental attempt to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge to £14,500 for charity.

The Landfill Projects team start their monumental attempt to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge.

The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks across Scotland, England and Wales – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. The challenge is to complete it all within 24 hours – including travel time between base camps and traversing all three mountains!

It’s certainly not a challenge for the faint-hearted.

The efforts were all made to raise money for two amazing charities that are close to our hearts: Derian House and The Campbell Burns Metabolic Trust. Each person was set the challenge of raising £300, to match the amount funded by the company.

The total walking distance of the challenge is 23 miles, with a total ascent of 3064 meters. So, it’s certainly not an easy challenge! The nature of completing it in 24 hours also means Scafell Pike has to be climbed at night. An added challenge made for added awards, as the descent was made during sunrise.

The team had to put in hours of training before kicking off their attempt, getting their walking boots on in the months leading up to the challenge date.

Through their training and determination, and despite injuries, 12 of the 14 members of the team completed all three mountains, up and down within 24hrs! A huge achievement for everyone involved.

The boss man himself, Paul Eckersley, gets a particular shoutout as he managed to finish first from the group in a time of 23hrs 19mins!

Thank you so much to everybody who supported Landfill Projects Ltd. throughout this challenge. We have raised an amazing £14,500 including Gift Aid!

Fun fact: There’s a common misconception that the mountains that form the challenge are the three tallest on the British mainland. However, it’s an important distinction that they are the tallest mountains within each representative country. Scafell Pike is the tallest in England; Snowdon, the tallest in Wales and Ben Nevis the tallest in Scotland. England is falling behind in terms of mountain size, as there are over one hundred peaks in Scotland that are higher than Scafell Pike!
