LFP Landfill – Whinney Hill
Temporary and permanent capping system at the largest landfill site in the North West
We were tasked to complete site remediation works, alongside the construction of landfill cells at Clayton Hall Landfill site in Lancashire.
The project was launched after the Environmental Agency had reported an increased number of complaints regarding odours on site.
We began work after a previously contracted supplier had failed to construct the necessary cell, as they were unable to remove soils from the area. This provided us with the opportunity to showcase our landfill restoration expertise and assist the client during a difficult period.
The project included the installation of a composite geosynthetic and mineral lining system which incorporates leachate drainage. This acts as a protective barrier, whilst allowing leachate to drain through naturally. An electrical Ebox system was also installed to automatically control surface water and leachate to allow works to continue.
Access to the site had proven problematic, requiring the construction of a temporary relief road, travelling to the site’s southern batter slope. This allowed the team to dispose of soil waste far more efficiently throughout the project. Constructing the road required a bespoke design and the development of installation and commissioning techniques but was important in the success of the project. Upon completion, the land was restored to its previous state to not leave behind any visual signs of the adaptations made to the land.
The team also constructed a series of service trenches. These had to be maintained to ensure they always remained dry and free from contamination during the works to protect high-voltage cables. While this proved challenging, it ultimately contributed to the overall success of the project.
This project was supported by our ability to integrate an additional leachate extraction system without replacing existing pipework and services. Not only did this save valuable resources, it also meant the performance of the existing system was not impacted.
The new system was successfully implemented, reducing odour emitted from the site and minimising damage to the existing infrastructure.
